Flooding regularly affects our nation’s communities and infrastructure—and transportation infrastructure is no exception. Flood water can overtop roads, leading to lane closures, traffic slowdowns, road closures, and travel disruptions. It can even damage roadways and supporting drainage infrastructure.

ICF analyzed available roadway flooding incident data from the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) State Highway Administration to quantify the toll that roadway flooding takes on the transportation system and its users. Download this paper to learn:

  • What percentage of flooding occurs outside of FEMA-designated flood zones
  • The impacts of flooding on Maryland’s road users
  • An analysis of the state’s flooding “clusters”
  • The seasonality and duration of Maryland’s floods
