Research in real-time: Cancer Information Analysis and Tracking

Keeping the world up-to-date on the latest cancer discoveries

ICF provides the most recent literature to six editorial boards of cancer specialty experts through the Cancer Information Analysis and Tracking (CIAT) program. The boards review emerging science and ICF translates key takeaways into digestible summaries. The content is then distributed to help medical professionals and the public alike understand the latest research—arming them with better information to prevent cancer and improve treatments.

Challenge

Ensure information resources are up-to-date for all cancer types with the highest quality research and practice standards.

Informed care for millions of patients

Millions of people are diagnosed with cancer each year in the U.S. alone. With so many lives on the line, the National Cancer Institute saw an urgent need to keep providers and patients informed on the latest research. But—in an age when people expect to easily find information online—the solution had to provide instantaneous answers vetted by real experts. To build a reliable resource, the Institute turned to ICF. We provide newly published studies and best practices to panels of highly-qualified professionals to review, and then translate the research into plain language before disseminating it on Cancer.gov through the Physicians Data Query.

Solution

Related services and industries

Engage a team of 26 healthcare scientists, professionals, and librarians to continually vet new research and summarize it in plain language.

Big picture support for critical initiatives

ICF provides subject matter expertise, content developers, librarians, editorial and writing support, meeting logistics, and management help to the CIAT program. With this end-to-end coverage, CIAT is able to get research findings out of the lab and into the hands of the people who really need it—faster than ever before.

Results

Anyone—whether a medical professional, a patient, or a loved one—can easily access the latest information on cancers of all kinds through the Physicians Data Query (PDQ). Information is available in both English and Spanish and covers everything from prevention to palliative care—helping improve cancer care for all.

The PDQ is a one-stop-shop for cancer information summaries, drug summaries, drug terminology, and a genetic dictionary. It contains:

700+

cancer information summaries in English and Spanish

300

"For more than 20 years, members of the CIAT team have supported the National Cancer Institute in their efforts to rapidly move research into the hands of health care providers and consumers – ensuring the provision of faster and more effective treatment responses to one of the nation’s leading causes of death."
