Renato focuses on climate change and clean energy transition, with over 15 years of experience in energy, environment, and climate change. He leads the EU-China Emissions Trading System (ETS) Platform, a project funded by the European Union . Renato is also an associate of the China Carbon Forum and a member of the Energy Working Group of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China.
Renato is an industry respected and recognized expert in climate policy and international carbon markets. He has been living in Asia for nearly 15 years. Renato led a delegation of observers to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP21 and COP22 and coordinated three other delegations of observers to COP23-COP25. He has experience supporting the EU, China, Korea, and Ukraine ETS policy design and implementation. Renato completed his Masters Degree in Chinese studies with a thesis on “The Use of Renewable Energies in Northwest China” (off-grid systems). He also attended a Master of Arts program in economics, energy, and environmental policy. From there, he transitioned into a Ph.D. program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Portugal program, completing one semester of coursework on sustainable energy systems.
Renato is also a senior fellow with the ICF Climate Center. In this role, he provides compelling research and objective perspectives on a wide range of climate-related topics to help advance climate conversations and accelerate climate action.
