This ICF white paper from 2015 gave a review of the integration efforts in the states of California, New York and Hawaii. What we found was that the efforts to integrate new Distributed Energy Resources (DER) onto the grid in an efficient way required new internal integration across utilities and regulators that had not previously been seen before. ICF's recommended states get as early a jump as possible in developing customer insights, adopting new distribution planning and related processes, identifying new enabling system capabilities, and considering what outcomes will best position them for the future.
