David Mutonga

Senior Manager, IDDS Team Lead, Kenya

David Mutonga is a medical epidemiologist with extensive experience in public health systems and global health security strengthening. He graduated from the University of Nairobi with a degree in medicine and surgery and holds a master’s degree in applied epidemiology. He is also an alumnus of the Kenya Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP).

David is the Kenya team lead for the USAID-funded Infectious Disease Detection and Surveillance (IDDS) project, and the country representative for ICF in Kenya. He has worked for the Kenya Ministry of Health leading surveillance and epidemic response activities, the World Health Organization (WHO) in South Sudan as well as the WHO Regional Office for Africa in Congo-Brazzaville supporting emergency preparedness and response, and with the USAID Preparedness and Response project.

For that project, David was the regional One Health advisor for East Africa based in Kampala, Uganda, where he spearheaded regional efforts to establish and strengthen multisectoral coordination mechanisms to address emerging pandemic threats at the animal-environment-human interface, as part of the USAID Emerging Pandemic Threats 2 program under the Global Health Security Agenda.

He also worked as a Kenya FELTP faculty member and later as a fellow in the Field Epidemiology Training Programs in South Africa and Thailand, through a partnership between the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Training Program in Epidemiology and Public Health Networks. David has contributed immensely to the strengthening of public health systems to prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats especially through a multisectoral and multidisciplinary approach in Kenya and globally.
