Demand-Side Management (DSM) Support in Tanzania

In 2013-2014, the Energy Efficiency for Clean Development Program (EECDP) conducted a dual work stream project in Tanzania to improve demand side resource planning for the energy sector:

Demand side management (DSM) work stream. Focused on developing programs to reduce consumer energy demands, estimated DSM potential was used to develop seven programs that, if implemented, could reduce Tanzania’s system peak demand by 11.5 percent after five years.

Green buildings initiative work stream. Used energy potential savings and market assessment to develop recommendations for expanding green building initiatives in six commercial building types in Tanzania. If implemented, the modeled green building standard could result in energy bill savings from 10 to 40 percent across all six building types.

EECDP demonstrated how Tanzania could take advantage of DSM opportunities, reducing peak energy demand while remaining financially viable. As power providers to commercial, residential, and industrial customers, utilities are well-positioned to incentivize customers to reduce energy and save money. Incentive programs can alleviate the need for load-shedding and allow utilities to meet increased demand at a lower cost than adding generation.
