Methane Emissions from the Oil and Gas Industry: “Making Sense of the Noise”

Earlier this year, the White House announced plans to cut methane emissions produced by the oil and natural gas industries by nearly half in the next decade. Since then, EPA proposed new regulations on methane emissions from new and modified sources. New information on methane emissions is becoming available from various sources, quantities, and patterns of methane emissions from the oil and gas sectors. However, they use different methodologies and represent diverse samples of the numerous oil and gas facilities.

In this white paper, ICF experts:

  • Systematically lay out the various key studies published in the past year
  • Discuss the technical context
  • Identify some important parameters against which to weigh the information
  • Discuss implications of the studies and regulatory actions on the potential for methane emissions mitigation from the oil and gas industry
