The Agentic Future: Are federal agencies prepared for what’s ahead?

Agentic artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining traction across federal agencies, but federal leaders find that scaling it is an operational challenge more than a technical one.

The latest research from MeriTalk and ICF reveals:

45%

say their agencies are using agentic AI in at least one production or operational workflow.

34%

say their agency is exploring or piloting agentic AI.

85%

expect agentic AI to become critical to their mission within the next three years.

91%

say the biggest challenge with agentic AI will be redesigning workflows, not deploying the technology.

AI readiness gaps

While most federal leaders feel prepared for key elements of agentic AI, far fewer have taken critical foundational actions.
