Africa Abajas

Africa currently serves as project manager for the implementation of ReFuelEU Aviation, supporting the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

She specialises in aviation sustainability, decarbonisation strategies, carbon markets, and regulatory implementation, advising public and private sector clients on the design, implementation, and compliance aspects of aviation climate policies.

Prior to joining ICF, Africa led the aviation business line at Vertis Environmental Finance, where she advised airlines, aviation stakeholders, and governments on compliance with carbon market mechanisms, including the EU ETS, UK ETS, and ICAO's Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). She also worked on international capacity-building programmes in several countries in Africa and Asia, supporting the implementation of aviation climate policies.

Earlier in her career, Africa served as a policy advisor at the Spanish Civil Aviation Authority, where she contributed to negotiations related to the EU ETS and CORSIA and participated in European initiatives on sustainable aviation fuels. She began her professional career working for an airline association, acting as a liaison between industry stakeholders and regulators.

Throughout her career, she has supported governments, regulators, industry associations, and aviation stakeholders in navigating evolving environmental requirements and advancing the sector's transition towards net zero aviation.
