Science Communications Specialist

The Engagement and Communications Specialist supports the communications functions of the U.S. Global Change Research Program’s National Coordination Office (USGCRP NCO). The position is responsible for publication design and layout, maintaining and growing USGCRP’s social media presence, and supporting internal and external engagement and communications activities.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage USGCRP social media presence. Develop compelling science-focused content, build an editorial calendar to manage content and plan campaigns, and track analytics to monitor performance.
  • Create layout and manage digital and print production for USGCRP publications (Our Changing Planet, Strategic Plan and updates, etc.), working closely with Science Writer/Editor to implement text and layout adjustments.
  • Produce USGCRP’s bimonthly newsletter, including soliciting content and maintaining mailing list.
  • Create collateral materials for USGCRP products and activities (e.g., figures, summary documents, fact sheets, brochures, etc.).
  • Ensure all public-facing products conform to USGCRP visual identity guide, including templates for presentations, documents, business cards, fact sheets, etc., and ensure staff are applying branding/identity principles to products.
  • Monitor USGCRP’s engagement email, disseminating or responding as needed.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for the planning and execution of engagement activities targeting a variety of participant and stakeholder groups.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years professional work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in a field related to communications, graphic design, or environmental sciences.
  • Experience synthesizing information from multiple sources into a cohesive product.
  • Experience in communicating climate and/or environmental science related material.
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, and presenting technical information in digital and print formats suitable for both general and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated success in designing pamphlets, brochures, fact sheets, posters, and product packaging.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and Google Apps.
  • Experience supporting the planning and organization of meetings and events such as seminars, public forums, and workshops.
  • A proactive attitude, with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks under tight or shifting deadlines.
