Job Description

The junior biologist should be a generalist entry-level or mid-level biologists who can perform (or quickly be trained on) nesting bird surveys, construction monitoring, smaller task management, writing sections of biological technical reports, drafting monitoring reports, etc. Position will be based out of our San Diego, CA office.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and execute field assignments for San Diego and southern California-based work. Conduct surveys and monitoring pursuant to the relevant regulations, codes and/or industry standards. Document field findings in monitoring logs, reports or email communications, as appropriate. Communicate with ICF project managers and senior biologists. The junior biologist must be able to travel to field sites in other counties, including but not limited to Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.   


  • A BA/BS in Biology, Ecology, or related discipline
  • 1+ years of environmental/consulting field experience
  • Technical expertise in southern California and the ability to learn local San Diego geography and resources
  • Basic botanical or wildlife knowledge
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to respond timely to deployment requests (i.e., sometimes next day)
  • Ability to travel to field sites in Southern California and occasionally assist with surveys in rugged, undeveloped terrain
  • Ability and experience conducting work in active construction sites and communicating with operators
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, Outlook, Excel)

Preferred Skills

  • Basic documentation/data management experience
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) software skills
  • Intermediate or advanced nest surveying, active nest monitoring, and buffer establishment.

Professional Skills

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision making capabilities.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, Outlook, Excel)
  • Computer access.
