Senior Communications Specialist, Community Development

Job Description:

ICF is seeking a Senior Communications Specialist to support knowledge management projects with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). You will lead tasks such as knowledge management, content development and management, training development and delivery, customer support, and web development. You will contribute to delivering fresh, innovative, and user-focused content and responding to a wide array of customer needs to support affordable housing and community development. You will have an opportunity to provide an exceptional customer experience to those seeking information from HUD, including lenders, state and local governments, nonprofits, Public Housing Authorities, tribes, the general public, and much more.

This position requires 3-5 years of related work experience in digital/web projects and an interest or experience in housing or community development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team of HUD subject matter experts, content managers, customer service specialists, software developers, user experience experts, data analysts, designers, and more
  • Continuously develop knowledge of HUD’s programs to inform content and respond to user needs
  • Write and edit content for clarity, readability, and effectiveness
  • Manage web content, including developing and disseminating email campaigns and other communications
  • Effectively present ideas to different audiences (from the general public to subject matter experts)
  • Manage task scope, schedule, and budget
  • Develop and maintain protocols, process flows, templates, and tracking tools
  • Develop and maintain writing style guides
  • Support user research and usability testing
  • Provide user support, including policy and technical support
  • Support website development and maintenance, including conceptualizing and updating webpages and tools
  • Work with a team to prepare written and web products, training materials, or other deliverables to clients
  • Support and lead training planning and logistics
  • Providing general project and meeting support (note taking, budget tracking, data analysis, filing)

Basic Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of related work experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Experience in applications such as Salesforce, Confluence, JIRA
  • Superior skills in Excel and data analysis including familiarity with pivot tables, vlookup, formulas, and macros and creating and using spreadsheets to track, clean, and analyze large data sets
  • Superior skills in Word including document formatting and production
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications (PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio)
  • Experience making web content user-friendly
  • Ability to manage a small project team to complete tasks within established budgets and timeframes
  • Ability to effectively write communication that responses fully to an individual’s question in a helpful tone
  • Ability to tailor communications for the web and to people with varying levels of technical understanding
  • Excellent copyediting and QA/QC skills
  • Outstanding customer service including being able to remain cool under pressure and possessing a no-problem-too-big-or-too-small attitude
  • Passionate problem solver with good judgment and strong analytical skills who can resolve project roadblocks and troubleshoot issues in a time sensitive environment
  • Demonstrated leadership and self-motivated
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks with competing deadlines
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • An extremely strong and demonstrable work ethic
  • Tech savvy individual who is eager to learn about web applications and software

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Experience managing tasks or projects
  • Knowledge of Visio
  • Knowledge of 508 compliance
  • Experience managing email communications, social media, and multimedia sites
  • Experience in web development/design
  • Interest in doing good and supporting affordable housing and community development
