Economics Researcher (Oil and Gas)

ICF is seeking qualified junior analysts to support our expanding energy team in the areas of electric power and petroleum and natural gas markets. You will contribute to the development of innovative, analytical, high quality products and services, typically working on multiple projects with all levels of staff.  The team’s primary services involve leveraging ICF’s research, data, and proprietary analytical tools to support client strategy or policy analysis, or to develop energy insights to inform decision-making. Electric sector consulting engagements may involve specific technical or economic issues related to power and transmission markets.

Some work involves sophisticated power sector modeling to answer question related to the impact of policies on the sector, the value of investments, or related issues.  Petroleum and natural gas consulting engagements typically integrate oil and natural gas market fundamental analysis, resource assessments, infrastructure studies, and financial analysis to provide advice on energy market trends, regulatory issues, and investments.  ICF’s clients include federal, state and local government clients and commercial entities.

This position is located at our headquarters office in Fairfax, VA, with some client-site assignments in Washington D.C.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide research, analysis, writing, management support, and reporting on specific technical issues
  • Collect and analyze data for modeling or analytic projects
  • Monitor markets and the key regulatory bodies in order to identify the prospects of changes in regulations and other market-related developments that may affect the nation's infrastructure
  • Research state energy and environmental regulations and policies
  • Create written documents that convey key analytic findings for distribution to internal/external clients

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Economics or related subjects, with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Up to 2 years’ experience in energy analysis or the energy sector 
  • Excellent research and writing skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly
  • Ability to demonstrate strong quantitative and/or modeling skills, specifically database management and data analysis skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to develop and use available information sources
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • US Citizenship required

Preferred Skills/Experience:

Knowledge of electric power generation, transmission and distribution; and/or petroleum and natural gas supply and infrastructure.

  • Knowledge of linear optimization and production cost modeling is an advantage
  • Advanced Microsoft Office (Excel and Access) skills
