Instructional Designer

We are seeking candidates who can help us create dynamic, engaging, exciting content with an emphasis on user-centered design, user experience (UX), and accessibility for all learners. This requires candidates who are nimble and innovative in their application of instructional design principles.

Using your mix of creative skills and project awareness, the successful candidate will create interactive and engaging ways to communicate content knowledge as well as provide feedback on other team members' materials. The candidate will have the ability to develop a range of instructional materials including classroom-based training, online training and performance support tools, instructor-facilitated distance-delivered courses, communication materials, case studies, job aids, etc. Experience with designing instruction for Level 2 & 3 Web-based training, including complex interactions, is a plus.

The successful candidate will join our team based in the DC area with the option to work from home or at ICF’s headquarters in Fairfax, VA. We focus on providing practical solutions to challenges in management and organizational change for public and private sector clients. These solutions include innovative, creative, and responsive training, organizational development, change management, and strategic performance improvement services.

Responsibilities:   

  • Lead a small course development team as a principal instructional designer under the supervision of a Project Manager.
  • Ability to work independently but utilize the team as appropriate.
  • Analyze, design, and develop instructor-led, web-based, and instructor-facilitated distance-delivered courses in partnership with subject matter experts, including:
    • Conduct training analysis.
    • Design multimedia/web storyboards and training.
    • Measure and evaluate effectiveness of training.
    • Prepare all instructor materials (course outline, background material, and training aids) and student materials (course manuals, workbooks, handouts, completion certificates, and course critique forms).
  • Independently facilitate training product design workshops and deliverable walkthroughs with clients and subject matter experts on a semi-regular basis at a location near Courthouse metro.
  • Participate in the development and review of products for adherence to style and storyboard guidelines, writing standards, course/task flow, and designing for standards such as SCORM conformance and Section 508 compliance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Instructional Systems Design, Adult Education, or related field from an accredited university.*
  • At least six (6) years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree or four (4) years of experience with a Master’s degree designing and developing online, instructor-led, or instructor-facilitated distance-delivered courses.
  • Two (2) years of experience creating training on topics related to bombing prevention, homeland security, surveillance detection, suspicious behavior and purchases, law enforcement, or related topics.
  • Experience developing and implementing instructional development processes applying the ADDIE methodology.
  • Experience leading course development projects.
  • Have the ability to obtain Secret security clearance and DHS Suitability.
  • Well versed in Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be able to obtain a government security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with designing instruction for Level 2 & 3 Web-based training, including complex interactions.
  • Certification as a DHS Section 508 Tester.
