ICF seeks to hire an editorial assistant at the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) National Coordination Office (NCO) to support the development of various sustained assessment products. The successful candidate will work closely with the Technical Support Unit (TSU) editorial staff at the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS), located in Asheville, NC. The TSU provides technical and logistical support to USGCRP’s development of assessment products. The overall responsibility is to work cooperatively with the lead science editor to support the development and production of high-quality scientific communications and government report . A particular focus is on copy editing and coordinating the development of scientific figures and associated documentation. (Note: this position is located in Asheville, NC. Permanent telework status is not available for this position.)

The USGCRP coordinates and integrates global change research and supporting activities conducted by 13 Federal Agencies and Departments. The day-to-day activities and operations of the USGCRP are facilitated by the USGCRP NCO. The NCO is responsible for promoting interagency coordination and integration of Federal climate and global change research programs and facilitating international cooperation.

Key Responsibilities of the Successful Candidate:

  • Performing copy editing of scientific written material for clarity, structure, and stylistic and scientific consistency, with a particular focus on climate assessment products.
  • Working with a team of editors, communication professionals, graphic artists, and writers to assist with the production of scientific government reports (both printed and digital materials).
  • Working with a team of editors, data specialists, communication professionals, and graphic artists to coordinate the development and production of graphics for climate assessment reports (both printed and digital materials).
  • Assisting the data architect with quality control of metadata for scientific figures.
  • Communicating figure development status to multiple teams as well as TSU management.
  • Maintaining consistency across multiple processes and product tracking tools.
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the digital reference library.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or relevant field.
  • Excellent MS Word and Excel proficiency.
  • Experience with scientific document preparation.
  • Solid knowledge of standard communication practices.
  • High attention to detail and ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and solid interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as make positive team contributions.
  • This position is based in Asheville, NC. Permanent telework status is not available.
  • This position requires minimal travel (1-3 times per year) to support USGCRP assessment activities.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field.
  • At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience with report content development, scientific and/or environmental content development, and editing of climate assessment products from regional to global in scale.
  • Some educational background or experience in a relevant scientific field.
  • Experience with science communication, especially in climate science. Visual communication skills desirable.
  • Experience with the development of scientific graphics.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Adobe Creative Suite
