Position Title:

Jr. Data Scientist / Biomedical Data Analyst

Position Description:

ICF is seeking a Jr. Data Scientist / Biomedical Data Analyst to work with biomedical and scientific research data in helping the NIH in categorizing and reporting on the areas / categories of diseases and conditions on which NIH funds research.  This position is located within NIH’s Office of the Director and supports the Research Condition and Disease Categorization program (RCDC). RCDC reports to the public on NIH-funded research related to various disease and research areas using thesaurus-based natural language processing and text mining tools.

The position involves working with biomedical scientific data to understand NIH’s research, disease, and conditions categorization needs using natural language processing (NLP) tools, medical thesauri/terminologies, clustering, and/or statistical machine learning tools.  It requires analyzing large sets of biomedical data to give it meaning; and, as necessary developing new methods for enhancing the categorization process. 

The successful candidate will:

  • Process, interpret and analyze natural language research documents and apply machine-learning, text-mining, topic discovery, and semantic analysis. 
  • Analyze scientific (biomedical, allied health sciences) research project materials
  • Present technical information to Subject Matter Experts
  • Interpret and implement technical/scientific information applicably
  • Learn new topics quickly, and have outstanding attention to detail.
  • Enjoy reading and analyzing biomedical research.
  • Be able to work both, independently and in a collaborative team environment.


  • Bachelor's degree in bioengineering, mathematics, biology, computer science, or computational linguistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and discuss technical biomedical literature.
  • Experience facilitating scientific meetings in a "lead" capacity for groups of various sizes and scientific expertise.
  • Proficiency analyzing data using Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and ability work in a collaborative environment. 
  • Highly organized, deadline driven, and able to multi-task.
  • Working knowledge of natural language processing methodologies
  • Requires US Citizen or US Person (Green Card Holder) with the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.

Preferred Skills:

  • Working knowledge of scientific thesaurus or other structured vocabularies and text mining tools and software. 
  • Demonstrated experience in immunology and/or genetics.
