Data Collector (2019 Louisiana Youth Risk Behavior Survey and Youth Tobacco Survey) 

Job Description:

ICF is conducting a statewide survey of students in grades 6 to 12, in a representative sample of students, regarding priority health-risk behaviors such as tobacco, alcohol and other drug use. The Louisiana Youth Risk Behavior Survey administered in grades 9-12 and Youth Tobacco Survey administered in grades 6-12 is funded by the Louisiana Department of Education, the Louisiana Department of Health and the Louisiana Public Health Institute. We are searching for Data Collectors throughout the state of Louisiana.

Data collectors are needed to help administer two questionnaires in approximately 100 public middle schools and high schools starting in February and continuing through mid-May 2019.  Orientation and training for this position will be prior to the fielding of the survey, sometime in late January.  Data collection will continue for approximately 6-8 weeks with the possibility of going longer.

This is a temporary position with an anticipated work schedule of 30 to 40 hours per week, for approximately 6 to 8 weeks.  Hours per week may vary.  This position pays $14.00 per hour.

If you live in Louisiana, have an interest in the health and well-being of adolescents, and can commit yourself from February 2019 through the end of April of 2019, we encourage you to apply.   This position is NOT recommended for students enrolled in spring semester courses that require weekly class attendance or other individuals who have daytime commitments that cannot be rescheduled.  This position is ideal for retired teachers and school administrators, recent college graduates, and graduate/thesis students able to work and travel full-time for duration of data collection.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend a 2-day training to be held in New Orleans LA. 
  • Travel among schools in the state of Louisiana to administer the Louisiana Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the Louisiana Youth Tobacco Survey.
  • Report to supervisor daily when in a school for data collection.
  • Act as on-site liaison with school personnel.
  • Coordinate scheduling and follow-up on non-respondents and conducting make-up sessions.
  • Enter school and class information into a web-based reporting system
  • Perform quality control on the collected information and package it for return to the main office.
  • Return data to main office via FedEx on a weekly basis after careful review and edit

Basic Qualifications: 

  • High school degree or equivalent required.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Must be able to attend 2 day orientation/training in New Orleans, LA on scheduled dates. 
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and transport up to 25 lbs of survey supplies and other data collection materials between classrooms and schools.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and available vehicle in reliable working condition to be used to travel from school to school.  Mileage reimbursement will be provided. 
  • Ability to pass a background check and driving history check
  • Must be willing and comfortable traveling and collecting data on your own.  Ability to travel several hours from home is a requirement for this position. 

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Experience in field data collection, survey/social science, research, sales, or marketing preferred.
  • Experience in working with children and teachers, particularly in a middle or high school setting preferred.
  • Experience speaking in front of large groups preferred, as Data Collectors will be speaking to large groups of students.
  • As schools begin as early as 6:30 a.m., an early-morning person is ideal.

Professional Skills:

  • Successful candidates will be extremely well-organized, with a strong eye for detail.
  • Ability to adhere to strict time schedules and arrive on time and prepared for all appointments is a must.
  • Applicants should have a high degree of self-confidence and the ability to deal with difficult situations in a calm/professional manner.
  • Ability and willingness to travel by alone is required. 
  • Ability to read aloud in a clear speaking voice in front of a large group required.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor is required.
  • Use of a personal cell phone (that is not shared by others) while working in the field is required.
  • Computer skills, including but not limited to:  working on a laptop, navigating the Internet, emailing and attaching files, and reasonable typing speed required.  An email address with the ability to check email daily is required.
