Dr. Shea Rutstein

Technical Director

Shea Rutstein is an economist, demographer, and survey specialist with 36 years of professional experience providing technical assistance in all phases of survey implementation in developing countries. He provides innovative methodology in large-scale household surveys and has undertaken groundbreaking research in the areas of poverty health indicators; the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Wealth Index; mortality and health consequences of inadequate birth spacing; and levels, trends, and consequences of infant and young child feeding and nutritional status. Dr. Rutstein also has extensive experience with both population- and facility-based surveys. He has undertaken substantial individual country and comparative analyses on fertility and infertility, contraceptive use, infant and child mortality, maternal and child health, and HIV/AIDS estimates and risk factors.

Dr. Rutstein has a Ph.D. in Economics and Development from the University of Michigan.
