Since 2005, James Gardiner has led multilingual, interdisciplinary teams on diverse climate, energy, and environmental assignments. Working in our Energy and Climate practice, James leads assignments in climate diplomacy and land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF). James also helps clients develop climate outreach strategies, clean-energy financing mechanisms, and energy-efficiency and LULUCF regulations.

James has worked in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas for governmental, multilateral, commercial, and philanthropic organizations such as the European Commission, the British Government, the U.S. Federal Government, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Breakthrough Energy Coalition. The outcomes of these assignments include securing funding for large-scale clean energy projects, facilitating intergovernmental outreach on climate change mitigation and adaptation, obtaining regulatory approval for projects to reduce emissions and increase energy security, and editing international energy-efficiency regulations.

Currently, James supports the European Commission in its climate diplomacy engagements both with major emitting countries and with countries particularly vulnerable to climate change. He also advises the Breakthrough Energy Coalition on best practices in clean energy innovation, building on studies for the European Commission on boosting finance to first-of-a-kind, commercial-scale, clean energy projects and facilitating clean technology transfer to developing countries. James previously worked on environmental and social impact assessments of energy infrastructure projects, most notably the World Bank-supported West Africa Gas Pipeline project to reduce gas flaring in Nigeria by transporting surplus natural gas to Benin, Togo, and Ghana for electricity generation.
