Water Cycle Science Coordinator
Location: Washington DC (Client Office On-Site)
The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) seeks to hire an early-to-mid career scientist with expertise relevant to coordinating water cycle science. The successful candidate will coordinate implementation of USGCRP’s water cycle-related priorities, serve as the coordinator of USGCRP’s interagency Integrated Water Cycle Working Group (IWCG) and may take on other science coordination responsibilities as needed. In this role, the successful candidate will also serve as the USGCRP National Coordination Office (NCO) liaison to the Federal water cycle science community.
The USGCRP coordinates and integrates global change research and supporting activities conducted by 13 Federal Agencies and Departments, and is overseen by representatives from those agencies and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). USGCRP is a dynamic program with continuously evolving priorities. The day-to-day activities and operations of the USGCRP are facilitated by the USGCRP NCO, which is responsible for promoting interagency coordination and integration of Federal climate and global change research programs and facilitating international cooperation.
Key responsibilities of the position:
Coordinates USGCRP water cycle-related activities through the IWCG
Supports U.S. Federal interagency water cycle activities (including facilitating/drafting relevant science and implementation documents) and facilitates their connection to the larger water cycle science community, as appropriate.
Engages and maintains productive communication with the broader water cycle science community (e.g., organizes conference sessions, workshops, and other for a recommended by IWCG) to review recent research results and synthesize the current state of understanding.
Directs any junior staff providing support for the IWCG.
Provides input on planning and implementation of the broader USGCRP research coordination portfolio
Contributes to USGCRP assessments (e.g., National Climate Assessment, National Nature Assessment), especially in areas related to water cycle science.
Provides strategic advice to NCO leadership on emerging science opportunities
Supports other science coordination needs, as they evolve
May serve as USGCRP staff liaison to other relevant interagency entities or related programs as requested.
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree (or higher) in the natural or applied sciences with specific experience in the water cycle field
1 year or more experience in this area of research or program coordination, or equivalent experience.
Knowledge of fundamental scientific and research concepts, methods, and advances related to the relationship between the water cycle, Earth systems, and global change
Familiarity with the water cycle research community in the United States and/or internationally
Ability to travel (up to 1-2 international trips and 3-4 domestic trips per year)
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with the federal government
Demonstrated experience in scientific strategic planning, prioritization, and coordination
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to facilitate development of consensus across complex organizational structures
Ability to delegate responsibility and manage priorities within a team
Advanced and compelling oral and written communication skills
Highly organized and detail-oriented
Flexibility and willingness to take on new tasks
