Advise clients in areas such as corporate strategy, business unit strategy, customer & marketing strategy, technology strategy and integration, market strategy, regulatory strategy, growth, and innovation.

Job Description

ICF is currently hiring for a Senior Consultant to join our Distributed Grid Strategy practice. We deliver advisory services to the energy/utilities industry focused on the integration of distributed resources into the planning and operation of the electric grid. ICF has over 50 years of experience advising utilities on a variety of issues, including integrated resource planning, power and gas market analysis, distributed energy resources (DER), utility customer programs, environmental strategies, and a host of other issues. We employ over 1100 energy professionals worldwide and have worked with every major investor owned utility in North America, and many overseas, as well as municipal and coop utilities.

This is a full-time position, and we are ready to hire immediately. Location is flexible. This is a consulting position with expectations for travel once it is safe to do so.

What you will do:

As a practice lead in the Distributed Grid Strategy team, you will plan, market, sell, and deliver innovative, best-in-class consulting services in the power sector with a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach that integrates strategic and technical advisory services to our clients. You will design and deliver a portfolio of work helping electric utilities to make strategic and investment decisions in areas including grid-modernization, electrification, and decarbonization. We are looking for an analytical individual that balances strong communication and technical skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. As part of your role, you will manage consulting assignments and support all levels of project staff, with direct responsibility for project management, client contact, and business growth. We want someone to help us build not just the future of our team but have a lasting impact on the industry.

  • Work with electric utility clients to tackle complex challenges related to grid modernization technologies and investments, including communication technologies and protocols, advanced sensing and control, operating technology and information systems integration, cyber security, and distribution system modeling and analysis.  

  • Work closely with other practice leads and our marketing function to lead the continued development of ICF’s grid modernization service offerings and advise on aspects of utility transformation related to accelerating growth of distributed resources.

  • Lead, coach, and share best practices with other ICF colleagues.

  • Establish yourself as a thought leader through external publications and presentations that showcase ICF’s technical leadership.

  • Manage technical consulting assignments, including outlining and drafting deliverables, managing the budget, and directing project staff.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Energy, or related disciplines.

  • 12+ years of related energy industry experience.

  • Project management experience with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Direct experience working with electric distribution utilities.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering, Economics or related.

  • Experience working for or with an electric utility or ISO/RTO.

  • Prior consulting/commercial project leadership and management experience.

  • Technical expertise related to the integration and utilization of DER

  • Experience with the dynamics of DER aggregations and their participation in organized wholesale markets and utility programs

  • Understanding of market design fundamentals and principles governing DER participation

  • Team management and building experience.

  • Experience with complex stakeholder engagement processes.

  • Understanding of power system analysis and/or financial analysis tools and methods.

  • Demonstrable experience in utility planning and/or operations, including regulatory filings and/or testimony.
