Senior Communications Specialist, Media Relations

We’re searching for our next Senior Media Relations Specialist. This role requires an advanced media relations/communications background and will focus on communications related activities that support a federal health and science-focused agency.

Strong candidates will have experience supporting clients with media relations activities and executing communications strategies. Experience providing support to a federal agency’s public affairs and communications operations is highly preferred. Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior level media relations strategist.
  • Use insights on effective media outreach strategy to produce national, regional, trade and targeted outreach plans and lists.
  • Develop monitoring and analytics reports that are key to federal health media relations and communications programs.
  • Provide expertise in identifying, connecting with, and building upon relationships with appropriate contacts within top, national-level media outlets and trade press that would be interested in the latest evidence-based findings, to promote proactive placement of spokespersons and key messages.
  • Deliver fresh, strategic, and innovative media relations counsel to the client related to generating positive, impactful coverage of health and science related topics.
  • Develop communications materials in support of new or expanding programs and initiatives, including fact sheets, press releases and advisories, toolkits, talking points and other communications products.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Marketing, PR, Communications, or related field.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of demonstrated professional experience to include: Assisting in the research, planning, research and strategic development of a comprehensive media relations and/or communications campaigns, working as an advisor and/or consultant to clients and project team members, and pitching health and science related news, studies and spokespeople to the media.
  • Currently holds, or is able to obtain, a Public Trust Clearance.

Professional Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience working for or providing support to HHS and/or National Institute of Health
  • Deep knowledge of national, local, health and science press, and integrated media.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially written.
  • Strong research and organizational skills, including processing large volume of data.
  • Highly motivated self-starter, with ability to manage tasks and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.

Job Location(s): The successful candidate for this role will be local to the Washington, D.C. metro area.
