Senior Communication Specialist, Health

ICF seeks a Senior Health Communications Manager to work onsite at the National Institutes of Health supporting media and press relations.

Work with Project Director, Deputy Project Director, and client to triage incoming media inquiries; press duty may require non-traditional work hours, depending on the news cycle, reporter deadlines, and topics.
Respond to internal and external media inquiries related to disseminating findings on cardiovascular science, blood and lung diseases, and sleep disorders.
Coordinate media relations activities on behalf of the institute within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including managing interview requests, managing internal clearances, tracking media inquiries, and capturing news articles.
Prepare materials to support media relations activities, such as briefing materials, FAQs, talking points, speeches, crisis communications, and responses to reporters’ inquiries.
Support special events for the media at NIH, conferences, and in virtual settings.
Own project tasks, with oversight from the client and senior team members, and complete key deliverables on time and with high quality.
Develop/conduct project planning activities to include collecting requirements and defining scope, developing project plans and timelines, and determining resource requirements.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with reporters, media partners, subject matter experts (e.g., researchers and scientists), and other NIH contractors.
Bachelor’s degree in public health, health communications, public relations, social sciences, or equivalent required.
7+ years of communications experience, federal government experience preferred; media relations experience and federal crisis communications experience a plus.
Experience developing communication materials or resources for the media, researchers, and the public.
Experience working with local media and partners across the public health community (e.g., healthcare teams and community health workers) to develop story angles and pitches.
Advanced Spanish language skills a plus.
Location: Within the current COVID-19 landscape, this role will be supported remotely. This role will ultimately sit onsite at our client’s Bethesda, MD office.
