ICF is currently seeking a Senior Botanist to be based out of our Sacramento or San Francisco office, or the option to work remotely within Northern California. You will provide botanical resources and regulatory support on a variety of energy, transportation, and water projects in California.
ICF is looking for a Senior Botanist that is a technically accomplished in plant ecology, botany, and wetland science to conduct small to large-scale field surveys (daily duration 8-10 hours) for vegetation mapping, wetland delineation, and rare plants throughout California and southern Oregon. The candidate uses dichotomous keys and applies federal, state, and local agency guidelines to identify plant specimens and wetland types. The Senior Botanist will work alone or in groups and may direct the work of a small number of individuals in the field. This person must have excellent data collection and oral communication skills. Current project workload is focused in northern and central California, but also includes projects in southern California.
What You Will Do
Conduct small to large-scale field surveys for vegetation mapping, wetland delineation, and rare plants.
Collect and synthesize data in the field.
Maintain close communication with project manager and co-workers.
What You Must Have
BS in Botany, Biology, or Ecology
Strong knowledge of California flora
Minimum of 5 years of experience conducting botanical surveys and wetland delineations.
Well versed in using dichotomous keys and applying federal, state, and local agency guidelines to identify plant specimens, vegetation communities, and wetland types.
Be organized and detail-oriented
Knowledge of special-status plant species and wetland guidance and regulations
Ability to walk on uneven and sometimes steep terrain in a variety of plant communities and landforms. On occasion, ability to excavate, using hand tools, soil pits to a depth of 18 inches. Ability to conduct field surveys wearing a backpack or carry up to 20 pounds of gear during field surveys.
Must have valid driver’s license and successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check.
What We’d Like You to Have
MS in Botany, Biology, or Ecology
California Rapid Assessment Method (CRAM) trained
Construction monitoring experience
Experience managing or leading staff in biological or wetland projects
Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision making capabilities, including ability to identify existing or potential problems and recommend solutions
Team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Ability to be flexible to handle multiple priorities and to work limited overtime as necessary
