Scientific Data Analyst

ICF seeks a Scientific Data Analyst to support and grow our Public Health, Informatics, and Technology (PHIT) line of business.  You will be responsible for providing bioinformatic data science support such as data analysis and data management to recommend solutions for efficient data analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and “omics” data. Custom database design and management, scripting and programming, statistical analysis and data visualization are important responsibilities of this role. Collaboration is critical and consultation with researchers on genomic experimental design, being up to data on technologies used, and providing expert consultation of bioinformatics support with subject matter experts in public health microbiology, epidemiology, bioinformatics, proteomics, metagenomics and microbial genomics is desired. The individual will demonstrate proven expertise in genomic analysis and infectious diseases.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for approaches, processes, and methods for the management, integration, analysis, and visualization of data from different data sources.
  • Develop custom scripts and software to automate scientific data analysis using Python, Per/BioPerl, R, and/or Java.
  • Operate and develop components for workflow management systems such as Workflow Description Language (WDL), Snakemake, and Nextflow.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of specialized, high-performance databases for different aspects of ‘omics analysis.
  • Maintain novel data science analytic workflows and connectivity to various existing data science analytic workflows used for downstream processing of genomic assemblies and relevant metadata.
  • Perform statistical analyses using R, Python, and/or other open-source or commercial statistical applications, as required.
  • Develop schemes and methods for visualizing complex scientific datasets using Tableau, SpotFire, ggplot, D3, R, Circos…

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Information Technology or similar plus 2 years of experience OR a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Information Technology, or similar.
  • Thorough knowledge of Unix/Linux or similar environments with ability to navigate in these environments and running and developing software.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to present technical ideas to stakeholders.

Preferred Skills/Experience: 

  • Experience working in public health; infectious diseases experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a consulting firm, development organization, or public agency preferred.
  • Experience with Python, Per/BioPerl, R, and/or Java.
