Research Assistant (Remote)
ICF's Child Welfare and Education Line of Business is currently seeking a Research Assistant. As a Research Assistant, you will apply your academic knowledge and work experience and gain exposure to major research and evaluation and technical assistance projects related to K-12 education, youth substance use prevention, and/or child welfare. Research Assistant are involved in development of data collection instruments, survey administration, interviews and focus groups, data synthesis and analysis, writing reports, literature reviews, data visualization, evaluation technical assistance, and other tasks as required. This position will contribute to projects for a variety of federal, state, and local agencies and foundations.
The position is full-time and based at ICF's office in either Fairfax, VA or remote. Safety of our employees are our top priority, due to current COVID-19 safety measures, employees who can work from home are required to do so. Once it is safe to resume standard practices of commuter travel and social interaction per government guidelines, we expect employees to maintain an office presence as required by project needs and management leadership.
The Research Assistant will be responsible for the collection and analysis of data through surveys, focus groups, one-on-one interviews, virtual and on-site visits, administrative data, observations, and evaluation technical assistance. Research Assistance will immediately assume active roles on project teams and will quickly gain responsibility commensurate with their success in the position. Candidates must be able to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines; be well-versed in research/evaluation strategies, methodologies, and analytic approaches; have excellent written and verbal communication skills; be able to maintain positive relationships with clients and colleagues; and play an integral role in proposal development.
Areas of responsibility may include:
Assisting with focus groups, including management of recruitment, logistics, note-taking, and reporting.
Conducting one-on-one interviews and focus groups. Analyzing and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data.
Designing and conducting surveys.
Providing evaluation technical assistance to grantees, including support in using a grantee data management system and fulfilling data collection requirements for the grant.
Providing evaluation technical assistance webinar support including training material development and background system support (e.g., in Microsoft Teams, AdobeConnect)
Producing reports and presentations for a variety of audiences.
Creating data visualizations and supporting staff use of data.
Conducting observations and occasional site visits to locations nationwide.
Developing literature reviews and writing research briefs.
Conducting usability testing on grantee facing data management systems
Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Policy, Social Science, or related discipline required. (Master's degree preferred.)
1+ years of experience conducting qualitative and/or quantitative data collection, research analysis, or evaluation
Demonstrated experience in producing high-quality, professionally written products is required
Experience and comfort communicating about complex technical issues—by phone, email, meetings, webinars, and/or in-person presentations.
Strong interest in topics such as K-12 education, postsecondary education/training, youth substance use prevention, diversity and equity issues, and culturally responsive research methods.
Willingness to travel occasionally for face-to-face interviews or site visits.
Strong ability to multi-task.
U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain SF-86 background check due to government contract.
Experience developing online surveys and using survey software such as Qualtrics
Experience conducting qualitative analysis using software such as Dedoose, NVivo, or Atlas.ti
Experience applying analytic skills in a working environment (such as merging, cleaning, manipulating datasets)
Experience in data visualization techniques and principles, including use of software such as Excel or Tableau
Prior work experience in a consulting environment
Fluency in Spanish in a research context, including comfort facilitating interviews and focus groups in Spanish.
Experience using a statistical package such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, or R
Proficient in MS Office Applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel), Office 365, and Microsoft Teams
Excellent verbal, oral, interpersonal and written communication skills, including experience with developing and delivering presentations and technical writing
Strong team player with the ability to take initiative and work well independently.
Superior attention to detail and the ability to meet stringent deadlines.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision making capabilities.
Strong ability to prioritize and manage multiple activities simultaneously in a fast-paced, changing environment.
