Historic Preservation Specialist

Architectural Historian

Speaking of growth, our Cultural Resources team, which includes Secretary of the Interior qualified Archaeologists, Historians, Architectural Historians, Cultural Landscape Specialists, and Historic Preservation Specialists  is currently seeking an early career Architectural Historian to work in a collaborative environment on complex environmental compliance projects. This position can be based out of our San Diego, Irvine, or Los Angeles offices.

Job Description

The early career Architectural Historian will work under the supervision of our cultural resources team managers and will assist in research, fieldwork, and reporting for built environment studies. With direction from more senior staff, will conduct historical research for context statements and property histories; serve as crew member for architectural surveys; prepare DPR survey forms; compose historic contexts; evaluate NRHP/CRHR eligibility; and analyze project impacts/effects. This position provides a basis from which to grow a career at ICF in accordance with the candidate’s strengths and career interests, including historic preservation planning studies, regulatory compliance documentation, and/or project management. This position can be based out of ICF’s San Diego, Irvine, or Los Angeles office with the option to work remotely within Southern CA.

What You Will Do

  • Assist with historical research in local, state, and regional libraries and archives.

  • Assist with historic resources surveys and assessments, including site inspections, research, photography, and evaluation under state and national criteria for historical significance.

  • Assist with the preparation of California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 series forms (including architectural descriptions and statements of significance ).

  • Assist with preparation of CEQA, NEPA, and Section 106 compliance  documents.

What You Must Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in preservation, history, architectural history, or associated field with 3+ years of experience or Masters in historic preservation, history or architectural history with 1+ years of experience

  • Strong written and oral communication skills;

  • Experience in NEPA, CEQA and Section 106 impacts/effects analysis

  • Demonstrated research and writing abilities, especially with the ability to present clear, precise, and authoritative arguments.

  • Experience completing DPR forms that evaluate resources for the purposes of CEQA, NEPA, and Section 106. 

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, with Adobe Photoshop and/or GIS a plus

  • Operational knowledge of the history and architectural history of California
