Health Communications Manager, Media Relations

Our award-winning agency is growing and in search of a Health Communications Manager, Media Relations to support our federal health communications work with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). ICF seeks a skilled media relations professional to work in close collaboration with an NIH client leading media outreach and press operations.

Candidates must be local to the DMV area and will be based out of ICF’s office in Rockville, MD— this is a hybrid position with an opportunity to work remotely while periodically attending meetings onsite at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD.

The Team

This is an exciting role supporting a team working on meaningful health communications and social marketing projects that help people live healthier lives. The team offers excellent opportunities for growth and mentorship as part of a dynamic and collaborative organization.

The Work

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong attention to detail and the ability to respond quickly and efficiently to both media inquiries and client requests, often juggling priorities and working with tight deadlines. Experience working with the media is required, and within a federal agency strongly preferred. Experience working in health communications, health education, and/or a public relations/advertising agency is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead media relations activities, including working with the Project Director, client, and other press officers to triage incoming media requests and coordinate responses to internal and external inquiries related to disseminating findings on cardiovascular science, blood, and lung diseases, and sleep disorders. Note: press duty may occasionally require non-traditional work hours, depending on the news cycle, reporter deadlines, and topics.
  • Manage day-to-day media relations activities on behalf of the institute within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including coordinating interview requests, managing internal clearances, tracking media inquiries, and capturing news articles.
  • Prepare materials to support media relations activities, such as briefing materials, key messages, FAQs, talking points, and responses to reporters’ inquiries.
  • Distribute and promote media products, develop targeted pitches, and reach out to reporters.
  • Support special events for the media at NIH, conferences, and in virtual settings.
  • Own project tasks, with oversight from the client and senior team members, and complete key deliverables on time and with high quality.
  • Develop/conduct project planning activities to include collecting requirements and defining scope, developing project plans and timelines, and determining resource requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with reporters, media partners, subject matter experts (e.g., researchers and scientists), and other NIH contractors.
  • Contribute across the project as needed to support other tasks and encourage collaboration, particularly as it related to late-breaking news at industry conferences, cultivating media partnerships, and cross-promoting media coverage and press releases on social media.
  • Work collaboratively with a federal health agency client team, subject matter experts, and the ICF team.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, health communication, health education, marketing, social sciences, or equivalent
  • 5+ years of communications experience
  • 2+ years of media relations experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Federal government health experience and/or federal crisis communications experience
  • Master’s degree

Professional Skills

  • Experience developing communication materials or resources for the media, researchers, and the public.
  • Experience working with local media and partners across the public health community (e.g., healthcare teams and community health workers) to develop story angles and pitches).
  • Strong team orientation with a focus on collaboration.
  • Strong organizational and writing skills, time management skills, and superior attention to detail.
  • Ability to think creatively and provide innovative solutions to clients’ communications challenges/problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal (verbal, written), and organizational skills, with ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities at a given time while interacting with multi-disciplinary teams to achieve project goals.
  • Proficient in Windows PC environment, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Spanish-language skills a plus.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is

$69,082.00 - $117,439.00
