Field Technician- Equipment Installation and Monitoring
We are looking for professionals who would like to jumpstart or transition their career into Environmental Science! If successful you will travel frequently within Maryland (and surrounding area), installing, monitoring, and troubleshooting air monitoring equipment!
The position is based out of Fort Meade, Maryland with extensive travel within the following states/locations: Maryland, Washington DC, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania). You will also receive technical training on equipment installation, troubleshooting and monitoring.
ICF seeks a Field Technician to conduct performance audits of state and local ambient air monitoring stations on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The successful candidate will be responsible for transporting and operating mobile air sampling and analysis equipment to perform field-based measurements of criteria air pollution parameters including particulate matter (PM2.5), ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and other related air pollutants.
The successful candidate must have or be able to obtain authorization for access to Fort Meade and the EPA Environmental Science Center.
What you will be doing:
Coordinate with state and local air monitoring agencies to plan and schedule side-by-side measurement-based performance audits of their monitoring site operations.
Plan and conduct extensive travel within EPA Region 3 (MD, DC, DE, VA, WV, and PA) to complete scheduled site audits. Travel requires prolonged periods of driving with a provided field vehicle (oversized cargo van or large SUV – no commercial driver’s license is required). Travel is expected to be required as much as 50% of the time.
Collect time-critical particulate matter filter samples and ship to laboratories for PM2.5 and Lead (Pb) analysis.
Utilize instrumentation to provide on-site analysis of air parameters including O3, CO, NO2, SO2, and other related pollutants.
Conduct all sampling and analysis in strict accordance with standard operating procedures and other required protocols.
Maintain, repair, and operate air sampling and analysis equipment.
Prepare written reports using MS Word.
Utilize MS Excel to present and analyze air data.
Perform other general laboratory support activities such as sample log in, inventorying, sample extraction and analysis, etc.
What we need you to have (minimum qualifications)
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, geology, geosciences, environmental sciences, or equivalent amount of working experience.
1+ years of relevant technical field experience in equipment installation and maintenance
Ability and inclination to work outdoors under a variety of environmental conditions, including wind, rain, cold, heat, and high humidity. You must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds, use ladders, and work comfortably at heights
Good driving record, valid driver’s license, and able to drive long distances within EPA Region 3
Must be authorized to work in the US
What we would like you to have:
Knowledge, training, or working background in air sampling instrumentation and air quality parameters such as particulate matter or trace gases
Current or previous PM2.5 and/or through the probe (TTP) sampling certifications
Knowledge or background in EPA PEP, Pb-PEP, and NPAP/TTP programs
40-hour HAZWOPER training and other related safety training
Environmental laboratory support capabilities
Demonstrated ability to work independently
Experience working at DoD, EPA, or other Federal facilities
