Environmental Sciences Technical Editor

To support ICF International’s dynamic growth and expanding client base, we are seeking an experienced Technical Editor to work in our Health Science Practice. This group of 90+ science professionals provides toxicology, hazard assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, environmental modeling, and related support that addresses the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals and microbes. We specialize in identifying, quantifying, and documenting the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment.

The Technical Editor’s project work will support federal agencies (such as U.S. EPA and NIEHS), state agencies, and private sector clients in developing reports that assess the human health impacts of pollutants. Specific activities will include technical editing and scientific writing; document management, formatting, and production; task and project management; staff training; and related tasks. The Technical Editor will interact regularly with a range of technical experts and project managers at ICF to produce high-quality technical reports and other documents, define project and program priorities, develop ICF’s capabilities, establish best practices, and ensure the overall success of ICF’s scientific support. The individual will also interact with technical and project leads on the client side.

The position can be located remotely, although preference is for a candidate to be located in either Fairfax, VA, or Durham, NC.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Content editing, copyediting, and proofreading of a broad range of document types on a wide range of technical and scientific topics
    • Document types may include technical and nontechnical memoranda, fact sheets, and reports; journal articles and findings reports; analytical methods documents to accompany chemical, biological, statistical, or modeling analyses; technical guidance manuals and training materials; regulatory support documents and response-to-comments documents; annual reports to Congress, public outreach promotional materials, and presentations to scientific meetings
    • Topics may include human health exposure and effects/risk assessment (including Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) toxicological assessments and summaries for EPA), air and water quality, toxicology, epidemiology, sustainability, nanotechnology, environmental impact analysis, environmental monitoring, indoor air quality, health effects of contaminants, and ecological risk assessment
  • Document production, including development and application of style/writing guides, style sheets, and template development
    • Preparing comprehensive writing guides for authors and editors to ensure correct, appropriate, high-quality, and consistent writing within documents and ensuring adherence to styles as specified in Chicago Manual of Style, Associated Press, American Psychological Association, in-house, and other style guides.
    • Preparing style sheets to guide writers and editors in consistent use of terminology, abbreviations, writing style, word choice, tense, and voice for intended audience
    • Developing and applying templates using Word advanced tools
    • Reference management and citations using EndNote
    • Ensuring 508 compliance and development of alternative text for images
  • Document management, from initiation and conceptualization to final publication
    • Interacting with clients, ICF project leads, and technical experts to define scope, level of editing, resource requirements, and interim steps to achieve deadline
    • Developing outlines
    • Identifying editorial teams, including assigning responsibilities
    • Developing internal schedules and resource requirements
    • Coordinating authors and editorial team to meet interim deadlines
    • Preparing contingency plans when schedule changes due to client priorities
  • Conversion of documents for Word compatibility (e.g., from Adobe Acrobat to RTF to Word)
  • Training of mid-level and junior staff in advanced Word application, template development, and basic editing


  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree or equivalent professional experience in a scientific or engineering field (e.g., biology, chemistry, environmental science, toxicology, epidemiology; environmental engineering) or related subject. Advanced scientific expertise is not a requirement, but the individual must be able to review and understand scientific concepts.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in technical editing and scientific writing, preferably in a field involving or related to assessing human health impacts of chemicals.
  • Experience with consulting preferred, preferably for federal government clients (especially U.S. EPA or NIEHS).
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality technical documentation in support of solving scientific questions.
