Energy Grid Technology Consultant
ICF is seeking a Senior Consultant to play a leading role in supporting the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in its mission to transform the U.S. electricity system to a clean energy future. Our client has responsibility for improving grid resilience and facilitating the grid transition through research and development of advanced technologies, including communications and control technologies, energy storage, transformers, and advanced sensing capabilities. The office is also responsible for overseeing Federal and state electricity policies and programs that shape electricity system planning and market operations.
This position is a hybrid role with working at the ICF Reston VA office, or remotely, and working at the client site in Washington D.C. We will consider part time candidates.
Responsibilities:
Work with senior government leadership to assess the robustness and benefits of the R&D portfolio.
Work to ensure the client’s ongoing and planned initiatives are aligned with the industry’s grid modernization R&D needs; assess gaps in their programs and recommend potential changes in approach.
Apply market context and technical expertise to help guide the Department’s research initiatives and help communicate those efforts to key stakeholders.
Provide guidance to ensure that ICF’s technical work for the Department is aligned, coordinated and consistent with their needs.
Identify key technical experts within the project team to provide specialized expertise.
Lead, coach, and share best practices with other ICF colleagues.
Manage technical consulting assignments, including outlining and drafting deliverables, managing the budget, and directing project staff.
Establish yourself as a thought leader through external publications and presentations that showcase ICF’s technical leadership.
Work closely with our practice leads and our marketing function to lead the continued development of ICF’s grid strategy service offerings to federal clients.
Qualifications:
Experienced Engineer with 15+ years of power utilities and/or renewable energy experience with detailed knowledge of renewable energy technologies, battery energy storage and other storage technologies, transmission and distribution system planning, grid modernization, grid control and communications systems, and grid components.
Knowledge of Federal and state electricity policies and programs that shape the electricity system.
Effective communication and strong technical skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. The ideal candidate can develop strong client relationships, act as an integrator across the client organization and ICF’s services to the client and be able to manage delivery of technical assignments.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems) or a related field
15+ years of experience in power system operations, transmission or distribution planning and operations, power market operations, or renewable resource development, working for or with an electric utility, transmission developer, DER vendor, or research organization
Proven proficiency in oral presentations and written communication skills
Project management experience with multidisciplinary teams
Preferred Skills/Experience:
Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems) or a related Engineering field
Experience in a consulting environment, particularly for the federal government
Ability to obtain a security clearance.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is:
$166,964.00 - $283,839.00
