Energy and Sustainability Researcher for Clean Energy and Climate Protection Programs

Location: Hybrid based out of our ICF office in Reston, Virginia or Crystal City, Virginia

Job Description:

ICF is seeking a detail-oriented, self-motivated candidate to help federal and other clients promote programs and communicate their energy and sustainability successes. This position will be a hybrid location role based in our Crystal City, VA or Reston, VA office. Successful candidates will support the implementation of high-profile federal programs to drive energy efficiency and clean energy solutions across the country. They will be part of a team that builds and maintains relationships with key market actors, reviews and tracks energy efficiency policy, and collaborates with other team members and clients to develop national and regional strategies to increase participation in clean energy programs

Key Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborating with government clients to facilitate successful and efficient program implementation.

  • Working directly with the U.S. EPA to develop marketing and outreach strategies to increase the market penetration of the ENERGY STAR program.

  • Engaging with industry stakeholders such as utilities and implementation contractors, responding to their questions and educating them on program requirements.

  • Managing email inboxes, reviewing program participant emails and drafting replies.

  • Creating clear, compelling messaging to communicate with a wide variety of audiences about program initiatives and partnership opportunities.

  • Scheduling, hosting, presenting, and providing technical support for live webinars.

  • Tracking program participation, identifying trends in participation, and offering strategy recommendations to improve numbers.

  • Reviewing policy updates in key areas and identifying impacts for key stakeholders as well as tracking changes to relevant programs.

  • Monitoring the scope of work and the schedule to ensure deliverables are completed and delivered on time.

  • Developing creative outreach for raising awareness and increasing market penetration, recruiting new partners, and fostering existing industry relationships.

  • Staying current and connected with the targeted market, including trends, policies, key players, and more.

  • Contributing to the development and deployment of communications and outreach strategies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, sustainability, energy, policy, or related fields


    • Self-motivated with highly developed interpersonal skills

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills

    • Ability to prioritize and work under strict deadlines

    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and long- and short-term planning skills

    • Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and contribute as a team player

    • Ability to work with all levels of internal staff, as well as outside clients and organizations

    • Flexibility and a strong work ethic with sound business ethic

    • Highly proficient computer skills (Microsoft applications)

    Preferred Skills/Experience:

    • Familiarity of the ENERGY STAR Brand

    • Methodical/logical thinker with ability to grasp the bigger picture

    • Familiarity with stakeholder outreach and management

    • Familiarity working with internal or external clients

    • Interest in energy efficiency and environmental programs
