Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Specialist

ICF's People, Performance, & Learning Solutions (PPLS) group focuses on helping our clients address their management and organizational challenges to achieve their goals. In simple terms, we help organizations do what they do—better. This includes helping organizations figure out where they want to go (i.e., their strategy) and then how to align their people, processes, and technologies to help them get there. We partner with Federal, State, and local government clients, as well as those in the commercial and private sector.

We are currently seeking a Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Specialist interested in joining a growing team of professionals who provide organizational development, applied research in workforce management and development, and strategic performance improvement services to our clients. This D&I Specialist will lead projects across client organizations, designing and delivering D&I and organizational culture-related programs. In this role, this individual may have opportunities to work with federal clients such as the Architect of the Capitol.

In the PPLS group at ICF, our work and clients are diverse. A few of our recent projects include:

  • Introducing a transformative barrier obliteration program that focuses on proactive prevention of discrimination and bias throughout the Social Security Administration (SSA).

  • Conducting a conduct an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Barrier and Trends Analysis to identify areas where Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) leadership can create a more inclusive, productive, engaged, and progressive work environment.

  • Using surveys, interviews, focus groups to conduct a climate assessment, focusing on issues related to sexual harassment, diversity, and inclusion for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

  • Conducting assessments to identify areas where barriers that impede free and open competition in the workplace operate to exclude certain groups of people and developing strategic plans to eliminate identified barriers.

  • Developing and administering assessments to senior ranking leaders for a Department of Homeland Security agency to help them make fair promotional decisions.

  • Improving processes, tools, and curriculum for workers’ compensation claim managers to support their work helping injured workers heal and return to work.

  • Identifying best practices and change management strategies to transform organizational culture to better support employee needs and increase diversity and inclusion in the organization.

  • Identifying the types and impact of employment practices utilized across U.S. House of Representative offices.

This D&I Specialist will have the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge, gain exposure to major projects, and interact with experts in the field, while building content knowledge and consulting skills. This individual will also contribute to the development of innovative, accurate, timely, and high quality solutions and services, working on multiple projects at one time with all levels of staff.

This position will be in Washington, D.C., with the potential to work full- or part-time onsite at a client location, depending on future project needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver D&I and organizational culture-related programs.

    • Identify speakers for various D&I programs and events.

    • Brainstorm ways to bring new voices/thought leaders in organizational culture and D&I to the workforce.

    • Generate creative ways for already client organizations to build on the success of their established D&I programs.

  • Lead Affirmative Employment Programs for client organizations.

  • Work as part of multiple small consulting teams under the supervision of Project Managers.

  • Review and summarize relevant literature to inform client project needs, ensure implementation of best practices, and influence, support and facilitate positive change at client organizations.

  • Edit and conduct thorough quality assurance checks of all materials to ensure they are of the free of errors and meeting the highest standards for professional deliverables.

  • Participate in data collection and analysis efforts (e.g., interviews, focus groups, pilot tests) to better understand our clients, their organizations, and their needs.

  • Synthesize data and summarize it in a compelling and easy-to-understand manner for use in presentations, learning materials, and reports.

  • Write sections of reports, guidebooks, and training materials, tailoring style and content for different target audiences.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Organizational Development, Management Studies, Communications, Psychology, Public Policy, Political Science, Liberal Arts, or Business.

  • 8+ years of demonstrated work experience in Diversity & Inclusion or related field (preferably in a corporate environment).

    • Must include current knowledge and experience (within last 1-2 years) in emerging inclusion and workplace civility fields such as inclusive leadership, unconscious bias, and gender diversity.

  • Experience assisting with the development and implementation of an EEO program.

  • Intermediate or advanced experience with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Excellent verbal and written skills with an ability to communicate with various levels (e.g., senior leaders, entry-level employees).

  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to engage and connect to diverse groups.

  • Ability to effectively conduct conversations on various D&I topics while creating an environment of trust, compassion, and understanding.

  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills.

  • Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, team environment with strict deadlines.

  • Excellent problem solving skills with ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential problems, and recommend solutions.

  • Superior attention to detail in all elements of work.

  • Ability to take initiative and ownership with minimal direction from senior staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Organizational Development, Management Studies, Communications, Psychology, Public Policy, Political Science, Liberal Arts, or Business.

  • Experience building relationships with Corporate-level leadership and across all levels of employees to develop and execute D&I programming.

  • Experience creating project plans and run of shows (i.e., item-by-item sequence of events) to support programs and initiatives. 

  • Experience using creativity to develop, implement, and scale new D&I programs.

  • Possesses outcome orientation to ensure successful program development and execution.

  • Keen interest in learning the foundations of human capital, leadership, training, and/or applied workforce and organizational research.

  • Understanding of consulting practices in Federal, state, and/or local government agencies.

  • Experience developing and/or delivering strategies and best practices to client organizations.

  • Skill in relevant specialized software, such as MS Project, Access, Tableau, survey software, Photoshop, or SPSS.
