We’re currently hiring a Communications and Engagement Lead to support the growing communications and engagement portfolio of the U.S. Global Change Research Program’s National Coordination Office.
The Team
The Communications and Engagement Lead supervises a small team of communications and engagement professionals who support the work of the U.S. Global Change Research Program, including the development of major national scientific assessments. This role will oversee the coordination, planning, and execution of engagement and communications activities in the National Coordination Office, as well as support the Program-wide call for enhanced engagement under the new decadal Strategic Plan.
The Work
The USGCRP Communications and Engagement Lead oversees and implements an overall approach to interaction with the Program’s stakeholders, including Federal agencies, USGCRP Interagency Groups, science producers, knowledge holders, and information users. The Lead is creative and resourceful, with excellent professional judgment. They collaborate with the USGCRP senior management team, and align communications and engagement resources to most effectively serve USGCRP’s vision, mission, and priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
Communications and Engagement
Develop and execute an overarching communications and engagement strategy for USGCRP’s National Coordination Office, shaping the ways the Program interacts with its stakeholders
Provide expert advice and guidance to USGCRP senior management team, National Coordination Office staff, and USGCRP Interagency Groups on internal and external communications and engagement strategies
Guide the articulation of programmatic and scientific topics in all forms of USGCRP and National Coordination Office communication products, including talking points, annual reports to Congress, presentations, newsletters, and social media
Ensure the program’s communication and engagement approaches are consistent with the requirements and constraints associated with this Federal interagency program and its member agencies
Ensure consistency of messaging and branding across platforms
Lead the development of communication and outreach products to supplement core USGCRP activities
Oversee development of an annual strategy and proposed budget for USGCRP presence at external events such as conferences, workshops, and professional society meetings
Staff Supervision
Supervise day-to-day activities of the Communications and Engagement Team
Oversee professional development, feedback, and mentoring of staff
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, or public policy, although another degree accompanied by highly relevant experience in public engagement and communications will be considered
8+ years of experience in public engagement or relevant communications role
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience building relationships between science producers and knowledge holders, and information users
Experience working with the Federal Government
Experience working in a formal supervisory role
Professional Skills:
Strong organization, writing, and time management skills, and superior attention to detail
Strong people management skills, with an understanding and appreciation of different working styles and focus on team collaboration
Skilled at asking questions and understanding varying needs and perspectives of coworkers and stakeholders
Ability to think creatively and provide innovative solutions to engagement and communications challenges
Ability to manage scope, responsibilities, and priority across multiple projects, delegating tasks where appropriate
Demonstrated experience and judgment in navigating complex, time-critical, and potentially sensitive situations within and across organizations
Proficient in Google Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft Office applications

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is:
$94,247.00 - $160,220.00
