Climate and Health Specialist

The U.S. Global Change Research Program’s (USGCRP) National Coordination Office (NCO) seeks to hire a Climate and Health Specialist, with environmental, public health, or public policy expertise, and relevant experience in public health or environmental health. The position primarily supports the federal interagency climate change and human health working group (CCHHG), as well as other federal interagency groups and initiatives. The successful candidate will serve as the primary facilitation and coordination support to the CCHHG and its workstreams, foster the integration of health activities and knowledge in other areas of the Program, and provide support as needed to interagency efforts in other areas of Program need, such as the National Climate Assessment.

The USGCRP coordinates and integrates global change research and supporting activities conducted by 13 Federal Agencies and Departments. It is overseen by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) of the Executive Office of the President, and by representatives from the 13 agencies. The day-to-day activities and operations of the USGCRP are facilitated by the USGCRP NCO, which is responsible for promoting interagency coordination and integration of Federal climate and global change research programs and facilitating international cooperation.

Key responsibilities

Coordination and support of the CCHHG:

  • Works with the CCHHG Federal Co-chairs to conceptualize, plan, and execute CCHHG monthly meetings, workstream calls, and intersessional calls.
  • Supports the co-chairs in managing CCHHG meetings, including scheduling, materials distribution, notetaking, and follow-up.
  • Assists the CCHHG with communications, member requests, and general inquiries.

Project management and support of CCHHG projects and initiatives:

  • Works with the CCHHG federal co-chairs and NCO leadership to provide support for planning, execution, and management of CCHGG workshops and events (e.g. conference exhibitions and sessions, etc.).
  • Manages and supports development, review, and editorial processes of CCHHG work products (e.g. fact sheets, workshop reports, special assessments, presentations).
  • Provides logistical, technical and meeting support for CCHHG workstreams and other project task teams as they form under CCHHG.

Program Integration (in close cooperation with the USGCRP NCO leadership):

  • Contributes, and coordinates contributions to USGCRP mandated reports, including Our Changing Planet, the National Climate Assessment, and Strategic Plan.
  • Identifies opportunities for USGCRP engagement to further understand the health impacts from global change and related information needs.
  • Engages with other USGCRP Interagency Groups to identify opportunities to further integrate health and global change across the Program areas.
  • Serve as a POC for the Health Chapter of the National Climate Assessment.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in environmental studies or science, public health or policy, or a related field, with at least two years of relevant experience, preferably in public health or environmental health.
  • Knowledge of environmental health science, with additional knowledge in global change science or impacts.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to acquire, interpret, and summarize information from a wide range of sources in order to promote the program.
  • Demonstrated skill in planning and organizing meetings and in planning, implementing, evaluating, and managing interdisciplinary programs and projects.
  • Experience in developing, reviewing and delivering technical and administrative reports.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a professional team, balance conflicting priorities, and work to deadlines.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.) and familiarity with teleconferencing/videoconferencing procedures and programs.
  • The position typically requires minimal travel (1 -3 times per year), to support USGCRP and CCHHG activities.
  • Demonstrated initiative, patience, proactive nature, and ability to adapt in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal (oral) and written communication skills, with an ability to act in a professional manner with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail, prioritize tasks, effectively multi-task, manage an evolving workload, and master new concepts and techniques.
