ICF is currently seeking an On-call Historic Preservation Specialist/Architectural Historian to be based out of our Seattle, Washington or Portland, Oregon offices.

About On-Call Employment with ICF

Given the seasonal or project-specific nature of our environmental work, ICF often hires environmental professionals as “On-Call” employees. On-Call employees are scheduled for work hours as they become available (we usually schedule work hours a few weeks ahead of time), and each on-call employee is free to accept or refuse the hours assigned to them in a given week. On-Call employees may work concurrent projects outside of their ICF assignment (along as their outside work does not create a conflict of interest with the work they do for ICF).

Job Description

The Architectural Historian will work under the supervision of our cultural resources team leads and will assist in research, fieldwork, and reporting for history/architectural history projects. With direction from more senior staff, will conduct historical research for context statements and property histories; serve as crew member for architectural surveys; prepare Historic Property Inventory forms; compose historical contexts; evaluate NRHP eligibility; analyze project impacts/effects. This position provides a basis from which to grow a career at ICF in accordance with the candidate’s strengths and career interests, including historic preservation planning studies, regulatory compliance documentation, or project management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with historical research in local, state, and regional libraries and archives.
  • Assist with historic resources surveys and assessments, including site inspections, research, photography, and evaluation under state and national criteria for historical significance.
  • Assist with the preparation of historic property inventory forms (including statements of significance and architectural descriptions).
  • Assis with preparation of SEPA, NEPA, and Section 106 regulatory documents.

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in historic resource survey and evaluation, preservation planning, cultural resource management, or closely related field.
  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural History or History.
  • Experience completing Historic Property Inventory forms.
  • Familiarity with SEPA, NEPA, and Section 106 regulatory requirements.

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Operational knowledge of the history and architectural history of Washington and Oregon.
  • Working knowledge of historic preservation regulations, especially SEPA and NHPA Section 106.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
