Background:

The Global Change Information System (GCIS), managed and curated by U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), is an open-source, web-based metadata management tool that serves as a key access point to supporting information for assessments, reports, and tools produced by the USGCRP – and the native data underpinning all of them. It links together a network of information, including organizations, datasets, and research, especially those products maintained and disseminated by government agencies and organizations.  The USGCRP coordinates and integrates global change research and supporting activities conducted by 13 Federal Agencies and Departments.

Position Overview:

The GCIS Student Assistant, under the direction of the GCIS Team Lead, will support the GCIS team and the coordination of interagency climate data and information activities of the USGCRP NCO. This includes, but is not limited to: data entry and research, quality assurance, meeting logistics, and note-taking.

This is a part-time position without benefits. Schedule is flexible based on course load, up to 28 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance with entering structured data into GCIS. This includes locating, comprehending, summarizing and synthesizing scientific materials, which are both scholarly and technical within academic journals, scholarly books, and government reports.
  • Investigate recent science data management research activities and keep team informed of new developments.
  • Provide meeting support for USGCRP interagency activities.
  • Maintain awareness of climate data and information activities across the Federal government.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of data or information systems.
  • Skill in successfully using word processing software, databases, and collaborative software tools.
  • Ability to capture meeting discussions in writing and synthesize those discussions into trackable actions.
  • Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including ability to organize and successfully implement a variety of tasks within a project.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited secondary or postsecondary school, college, or university. Must have college level coursework in a relevant discipline such as library or information science, earth systems or environmental sciences, geoinformatics, or computer science.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with research databases is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with scientific or environmental data desired but not required.
  • Experience in software development or database design a plus.
