Senior Archaeologist

ICF is currently seeking a Senior Archaeologist to be based in our Los Angeles office.     

Job Description

The objective of the Senior Archaeologist position is a qualified individual to lead archaeology and   cultural resources studies as either stand-alone projects or as part of larger multi-disciplinary projects.  The Senior Archaeologist will lead and/or oversee research, fieldwork, laboratory analysis, monitoring, and preparation of technical reports and environmental documents. Duties will include conducting or directing background research, survey, testing, evaluation, data recovery, and construction monitoring, laboratory work, report preparation as well as other tasks. Position requires a command of federal (NEPA, NHPA Section 106) and state (CEQA) cultural resources laws and regulations, excellent verbal and communication skills, time management, technical skills (fieldwork and analysis). The Senior Archaeologist is expected to lead or contribute to business development, marketing, and proposal efforts for cultural resources opportunities; or as part of a larger team on multi-disciplinary opportunities.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate technical work in archaeology, client management and task order management with an emphasis on transportation-related projects and clients.
  • Conduct studies and compliance approaches toward acquisition of permits and clearances (for federal, state, and local laws and regulations).
  • Evaluate resources for California and National Registers.
  • Write and produce reports, plans and documents, review the work of others.
  • Prepare or review cultural resources sections of CEQA and NEPA documents.
  • Coordinate projects related to environmental compliance and resource management, including client contact, budget control, invoicing, schedule, personnel allocation/planning, public interest facilitation, technical approach development, and subcontractor involvement.
  • Work with other cultural resources staff who provide technical support in field and office settings.
  • Develop resource management recommendations, assess project effects on resources, address, complex resource problems and issues that require advanced technical or regulatory knowledge.
  • Contribute in a team setting toward business development efforts within subject matter expertise.
  • Collaborate in an integrated team with engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and other stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or above in Archaeology.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist certification.
  • 10+ years of experience with increasing expertise and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated success working on transportation projects in southern California for local and state transportation agencies.
  • Must meet Caltrans Professionally Qualified Staff Standards  for Principal Investigator in Prehistoric Archaeology and/or Historical Archaeology
  • Demonstrated success working on transportation projects in southern California for local and state transportation agencies.
  • Experience preparing Caltrans cultural resources documents (HPSR, ASR, HRER, etc.).
  • A history working with private, public sector clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated research and writing abilities, with the ability to present clear, precise, analytical, and authoritative arguments in technical and environmental documents. (Submit a writing sample .)
  • Understanding of CEQA, NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA, and other state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Extensive knowledge of southern California cultural resources and associated regulatory environment.
